Conversion
20 °C = 68 °F

How it works

Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points (0 °C is 32 °F, not 0 °F), so converting between them needs both a scale and a shift, not just a multiplication.

Formula
°F = °C x 9/5 + 32 | °C = (°F - 32) x 5/9

Example. 20 °C converts to 68 °F. 98.6 °F (average body temperature) converts to 37 °C.

A few reference points

0 °C = 32 °F (water freezes). 100 °C = 212 °F (water boils at sea level). 37 °C = 98.6 °F (average human body temperature). -40 °C = -40 °F (the one point where both scales agree).

Frequently asked questions

What is the quick mental-math version?

Double the Celsius value and add 30 for a rough Fahrenheit estimate (it's a bit high above 30 °C and a bit low below 0 °C). For exact results, use the real formula: x 9/5 + 32.

Why isn't 0 °C equal to 0 °F?

The two scales were defined with different reference points. Celsius sets 0 at water's freezing point; Fahrenheit's original 0 was based on a different reference (a brine mixture), which is why converting needs an offset, not just a ratio.
