Cups to Grams Converter
Convert between cups and grams for common baking ingredients. Unlike converting between two weight units, this conversion depends entirely on the ingredient - a cup of flour and a cup of honey weigh very different amounts, because cups measure volume while grams measure weight (mass).
How it works
Each ingredient has a different density, so each has its own grams-per-cup figure based on standard published baking references (assuming a US cup of 236.588 mL, spooned-and-levelled for dry ingredients rather than packed, except where noted).
Grams = cups x grams-per-cup for that ingredient | Cups = grams / grams-per-cup for that ingredientExample. 1 cup of all-purpose flour is about 120g. 1 cup of honey is about 340g - nearly 3x heavier for the same volume.
Why can't there be one universal cups-to-grams number?
Grams measure mass; cups measure volume. The relationship between them (density) is different for every ingredient - flour is light and airy, honey is dense and heavy. A single "cups to grams" conversion factor only works for one specific ingredient at a time, which is why this calculator asks you to pick one.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my flour weight look different from another recipe site?
Flour weight per cup varies with how it's measured - spooned lightly into the cup and levelled (the standard used here, about 120g) versus scooped and packed (which can weigh 130-150g). When precision matters, weighing with a kitchen scale is always more reliable than a cup measure.
What if my ingredient isn't listed?
Look up that specific ingredient's grams-per-cup weight (many are published online), then use our generic Unit Converter or just multiply/divide by that figure directly.
Does this use the US cup or metric cup?
The US cup (236.588 mL). If your recipe uses a metric cup (250 mL, common in Australia/NZ/UK), results will be about 5-6% higher than a true metric-cup measurement.
