Running Pace Calculator
Your running pace is how long it takes to cover a set distance, usually shown as minutes and seconds per kilometre or per mile. Enter a distance and your finish time to get your pace, your speed, and the cumulative split time at each kilometre.
Split times per km
| Distance (km) | Cumulative time |
|---|---|
| 1 | 5:00 |
| 2 | 10:00 |
| 3 | 15:00 |
| 4 | 20:00 |
| 5 | 25:00 |
How it works
Pace is your total time divided by distance. This calculator converts your finish time into seconds, divides by the distance to get seconds per kilometre, and formats it as minutes and seconds. Speed is the same information expressed as distance per hour.
Pace = total time ÷ distance. Speed = distance ÷ time.Example. Running 5 km in 25 minutes is a pace of 5:00 per km, about 8:03 per mile, at a speed of 12 km/h.
Using pace for race targets
To hit a goal finish time, divide it by the race distance to find the pace you need to hold, then use the split table to check you are on track at each kilometre. Even, steady pacing almost always beats starting fast and fading.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate running pace?
Divide your total running time by the distance covered. For 5 km in 25 minutes, that is 5 minutes per kilometre.
What is the difference between pace and speed?
Pace is time per unit of distance, like minutes per km, where lower is faster. Speed is distance per unit of time, like km per hour, where higher is faster. They describe the same effort.
How do I convert pace per km to pace per mile?
Multiply your per kilometre pace by 1.609, since a mile is 1.609 kilometres. A 5:00 per km pace is about 8:03 per mile.
