MB to GB Converter
Convert between megabytes and gigabytes instantly. Pick binary or decimal depending on whether you're matching what your operating system shows or what a storage manufacturer advertises.
How it works
There are two competing conventions for how many MB fit in a GB. The binary convention (used internally by most operating systems) treats 1 GB as 1024 MB, a power of two. The decimal convention (used by storage manufacturers and the SI system) treats 1 GB as exactly 1000 MB.
Binary: GB = MB / 1024 | Decimal: GB = MB / 1000Example. 1024 MB is exactly 1 GB under the binary standard, but only 1.024 GB under the decimal standard.

Why does my drive show less space than advertised?
A drive sold as "1 TB" uses the decimal definition (1,000,000,000,000 bytes), but your operating system typically reports free space using the binary definition, where the same number of bytes shows as about 931 GB. Nothing is missing - it's the same amount of storage measured two different ways.
Frequently asked questions
Which standard should I use?
Use binary (1024) if you're comparing to file sizes shown by Windows Explorer, macOS Finder, or most apps. Use decimal (1000) if you're comparing to a manufacturer's advertised drive or plan size, or doing a strict SI/scientific calculation.
How many MB is 1 GB?
1024 MB under the binary standard, or exactly 1000 MB under the decimal standard.
Is this the same as GiB and MiB?
The binary standard here (1024) is what GiB (gibibyte) and MiB (mebibyte) formally mean. Many operating systems label these binary values as "GB"/"MB" anyway, which is the source of most storage-size confusion.
