Oven Temperature Converter

Convert oven temperatures between Celsius, Fahrenheit and UK Gas Mark - essential when following a recipe written for a different type of oven than yours.

How it works

Celsius and Fahrenheit convert using the standard temperature formula. Gas Mark is a different kind of scale entirely - a numbered dial (1-9) used on UK gas ovens - so it's matched to the closest standard published Gas Mark equivalent rather than calculated by formula.

Formula
°F = °C x 9/5 + 32 | Gas Mark is looked up from a standard reference table, not calculated

Example. 180°C is 356°F (rounds to the common recipe figure of 350°F) and Gas Mark 4 - one of the most common baking temperatures.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't Gas Mark a simple formula?

Gas Mark is a numbered dial setting, not a temperature scale with a fixed mathematical relationship to degrees - it was standardised by matching specific dial positions to specific temperatures, so converting to/from it means looking up the closest match on that reference table, not computing it.

Do I need to adjust for a fan/convection oven?

Many recipes and fan-oven manufacturers suggest reducing the Celsius temperature by about 20°C (or Fahrenheit by about 25°F) when using a fan/convection setting versus a conventional oven, since the moving air cooks food faster - check your oven's manual for its specific guidance.
