MPG to KM/L Fuel Economy Converter
Convert fuel economy between miles per gallon (MPG) and kilometres per litre (km/L), the way it's usually quoted in the US/UK versus most of the rest of the world. Pick your gallon type first - US and UK gallons are different sizes and give different results.
US and UK gallons are different sizes - pick the one your MPG figure was measured in.
How it works
MPG and km/L measure the same thing (distance per unit of fuel) but in different units for both distance and volume. The conversion combines the mile-to-km factor with the gallon-to-litre factor for whichever gallon size you select.
km/L = MPG x (1.609344 / litres per gallon) | MPG = km/L / (1.609344 / litres per gallon)Example. 30 US MPG converts to about 12.75 km/L. 15 km/L converts to about 35.3 US MPG.

UK MPG to km/L chart
UK (imperial) gallons are larger, so the same mpg figure means more km per litre than in the US table.

US gallons vs UK gallons
A US gallon is 3.785 litres, while a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 litres - about 20% larger. The same car quoted at "40 MPG" means a noticeably different real fuel efficiency depending on which gallon is meant, which is why this calculator asks you to pick one.
Frequently asked questions
Which gallon should I pick - US or UK?
Use US gallon for American car specs, EPA fuel economy ratings, or most global online sources. Use UK/Imperial gallon if your figure came from UK car literature or a UK fuel economy test.
Is a higher km/L number better?
Yes, same as MPG - a higher number means the car travels further per unit of fuel, so it's more fuel-efficient.
How is this different from l/100km?
l/100km (litres per 100 km) is the inverse idea - it measures fuel used per distance rather than distance per fuel, and a LOWER number is better. This calculator handles km/L and MPG, not l/100km.
