Density Calculator

Density describes how much mass is packed into a given volume. Enter any two of density, mass and volume to find the third.

g/cm³
Density
2.5 g/cm³
Mass
500 g
Volume
200 cm³

How it works

Density is simply mass divided by volume. Rearranging the same formula lets you solve for mass (density x volume) or volume (mass / density) instead.

Formula
Density = Mass / Volume | Mass = Density x Volume | Volume = Mass / Density

Example. 500 g of a substance occupying 200 cm³ has a density of 2.5 g/cm³ - close to the density of aluminum.

Frequently asked questions

What units should I use?

Any consistent set works - grams and cubic centimetres (g/cm³) is common for solids and liquids, and is numerically equal to kg/L. Just make sure mass and volume use compatible units before comparing your result to a reference table.

Why do some objects float and others sink?

An object floats in a fluid if its density is lower than the fluid's density, and sinks if it's higher - which is why wood (density < 1 g/cm³) floats on water (1 g/cm³) but a steel object (around 7.8 g/cm³) sinks.
