Molarity Calculator
Calculate the molarity (molar concentration) of a solution from the mass of solute you dissolved, its molar mass, and the total solution volume.
e.g. NaCl (table salt) is 58.44 g/mol.
How it works
First the mass is converted to moles by dividing by the molar mass. Molarity is then that mole count divided by the solution's volume in litres.
Moles = mass / molar mass | Molarity (mol/L) = moles / volume (L)Example. Dissolving 58.44 g of NaCl (molar mass 58.44 g/mol) into 1 L of solution gives exactly 1 mol/L (a 1 M solution).
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find a substance's molar mass?
Add up the atomic masses of every atom in its chemical formula from the periodic table. Common lab reagents also list molar mass directly on the packaging or safety data sheet.
What does "1 M" mean?
1 M is shorthand for a 1 molar solution - exactly 1 mole of solute dissolved per litre of total solution volume.
