Body Fat Percentage Calculator
Body fat percentage is a more accurate measure of health and fitness than BMI because it distinguishes muscle from fat. This calculator uses the US Navy circumference method, which requires only a tape measure and gives results accurate to within 3-4% of DEXA scan measurements.
Measure at the navel level.
Women only - measure at the widest point.
How it works
The Navy method uses the circumference of the neck, waist and (for women) hips, along with height, to estimate body fat percentage via a logarithmic formula validated against hydrostatic weighing.
Men: 86.010 x log10(waist - neck) - 70.041 x log10(height) + 36.76Frequently asked questions
Where exactly do I measure the waist?
Measure at the navel (belly button) level, keeping the tape horizontal. Breathe normally - don't suck in.
How accurate is the Navy method?
Studies show it is accurate within 3-4 percentage points compared to gold-standard DEXA scans - better than BMI for most people. Very muscular individuals may see slight overestimates.
