How it works

The tip is a percentage of the bill, added on top to give the total. Dividing the total by the number of people gives each person's share, including their portion of the tip.

Formula
Tip = Bill × Tip% ; Total = Bill + Tip ; Per person = Total ÷ People

Example. On a ₹1,000 bill with a 15% tip, the tip is ₹150 and the total is ₹1,150. Split between two people, that's ₹575 each.

How much should you tip?

Tipping norms vary widely by country. In the US, 15–20% is standard at restaurants; in much of Europe a small round-up or 5–10% is common; and in many countries tipping is optional or already included as a service charge. Check the bill for a service charge before adding more.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Conventionally the tip is calculated on the pre-tax bill, though many people simply tip on the total for convenience. Enter whichever bill figure you prefer as the base.

What if there's already a service charge?

If the bill includes a service charge or gratuity, an additional tip is usually optional. Set the tip percentage to 0 or a small amount as you see fit.
